Directions: Go 0.3 mile west on Front Street, turn south on Stamps Way into Beachfront Park, go 0.15 mile to Howe Drive, turn left, go approximately 100 yards to Elk Creek, next to paved bike/pedestrian trail.

Estuary and expansive tidal flats create an excellent spot for Western, Glaucous-winged, seasonal Mew, California, Heermann’s, and Herring gull; Caspian Tern. Best local spot for Elegant Tern. Also good for Black-crowned Night Heron, Western Grebe, Osprey, Great Egret, Red Phalarope, Whimbrel, and Sanderling. Walk the trail upstream for possible rarities including Least Tern. Walking distance to Northcoast Marine Mammal Center, Redwood National and State Parks headquarters, Shoreline RV Park, Ocean World, and the Cultural Center, where the Chamber of Commerce Visitor Center stocks Barron’s A Birdfinding Guide to Del Norte County.
